A chart has three layers
Your birth chart is a map of where each planet was at the moment you were born. To read it, you only need to learn three things: the planets (what), the signs (how), and the houses (where). Then the aspects (the conversations between the planets) bring the chart to life.
The planets: the “what”
Each planet rules a different part of you. The Sun is your essential self. The Moon is your emotional life. Mercury is your mind and your voice. Venus is your love language and your sense of beauty. Mars is your drive and your anger. Jupiter is what makes you grow. Saturn is what makes you mature. The outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, are generational forces that show up personally in big ways at certain times in your life.
The signs: the “how”
Each planet sits in one of the twelve zodiac signs, and the sign flavours how that planet acts in your chart. Venus in Aries loves directly and quickly. Venus in Pisces loves dreamily and devotedly. Same planet, very different style. Once you start thinking “planet in sign” rather than just “I’m a Scorpio”, the chart begins to open up.
The houses: the “where”
The twelve houses are the twelve areas of your life. First house: you and how you arrive. Fourth: home and family. Seventh: partnerships. Tenth: career and public life. A planet’s house tells you where in your life that planet is most active. Mars in your tenth house brings energy and ambition to your career. Mars in your fourth makes home a place where you fight (or build) hardest. Same planet, very different stage.
The aspects: how the planets talk
The aspects are the geometric angles between planets in your chart. Two planets close together (a conjunction) blend their energies. Planets ninety degrees apart (a square) create tension. A hundred and twenty degrees apart (a trine) creates ease. A hundred and eighty (an opposition) creates polarity. Most charts have a handful of major aspects that explain the recurring patterns in your life.
How to actually read a chart
Read in three passes. First pass: find your Sun, Moon, and Rising. That gives you the spine of the chart. Second pass: find your Venus, Mars, and Mercury, the inner planets that shape your love, drive, and mind. Third pass: look at the houses each planet sits in, and the aspects between them. By the end of the third pass, you’ll have a real picture, not just a list of facts.
